Prof Paul Rogers in JNU: Photos of the seminar

These are photos of the seminar in SIS, JNU (21 January 2010). Prof. Paul Rogers (of the Oxford Research Group) spoke on ‘Global Security and the War on Terror.’ Prof. Rajeev Bhargava, Prof. A. M. Chenoy (chairperson of the centre) were some other dignitaries at the said seminar. He himself suggested that anyone interested in drinking deep can download the full PDF of the paper ‘Global Security and the War on Terror.’ Click here to download the said paper which is available under a Creative Commons- Non Commercial-No Derivative licence.

His talk (including the question-answer session) lasted for about 1.5 hours and was attended by a packed house in the School Of International Studies (see photos below). The audience liked every bit of his talk which was full of anecdotes (from his Uganda field studies to the inputs from his sons working as lecturer and advisor) and interesting insights (at one point of time he flashed his BlackBerry phone to illustrate how much energy it uses compared to the first voyage to the moon). One of his assertions was that the period from 1945 to 2045 is of enormous importance for humanity. He also insisted on the climate change aspect among other things. He said he may not live until 2045 (he will be 100+ years if that happens which is reasonably unlikely) unlike us.

Please download and read his paper. He also addressed a gathering in the India International Centre later in the evening. The photos below are not of a very good quality as I am only an amateur photographer (and deliberately did not move much to shoot nice images fearing annoying others).

The following is a brief first-hand account of the said book release function with all the photos by Vikas a student of the centre. 🙂

The Eurasian Foundation organised a book release ceremony at room no. 203, Committee room, School of International Studies [SIS], JNU at 5:30 pm on 7 August 2009. The programme lasted for more than one hour and was followed by an elaborate dinner at the JNU new cafeteria centre which was of course preceded by Vodka, fruit juices and soft drinks among other things [Dr. Arun Mohanty says that “a student of Russian Centre must have some liquid in his glass!”]. I waited until 8.50 pm and left before the dinner began because I had to go for the Arundhati Roy meeting in the campus.

The ceremony was presided by chairperson of the centre Professor Anuradha M. Chenoy. The book was released by His Excellency Dr. Kairat Umarov, Ambassador of Kazakhastan to India. Ambassador Rajiv Sikri who was once posted Kazakhastan was also present and enlighted the listeners with his accounts on Kazakhastan. Prof Phunchok Stobdan from the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses was another speaker at the ceremony. Another ambassador from a Central Asian country was also present. Professor Ajai Patnaik was also one of the speakers.

Visit all the link in the bottom of the post for more on the book and the event.

This is the committee room, all ready for the launch!
